Tuomas Markunpoika is a Finnish designer who lives and works in Berlin. In 2012, he established himself as a contemporary designer following his graduation with an MA Cum laude in Contextual Design from the Design Academy Eindhoven. The work of Tuomas Markunpoika oscillates between design and art, industry and craft. Each work reflects the designer’s attraction for the interaction between the physical and metaphysical world; his objects are not just “material” but they reveal the mysterious memories and sentimental values attributed to them. Whether functional or merely sculptural, Markunpoika’s work invites us to reflect upon the notion of value and to explore objects beyond their predictable meaning.

'Engineering Temporality' series was nominated as the Best Furniture of the Year 2013 by the Design Museum, London. Markunpoika’s one-off and limited edition works have been exhibited in international institutions including the Cooper Hewitt, New York; Design Museum, Helsinki; Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt; MUDAC, Lausanne; San Jose Museum of Art, USA. Notably, in 2016, his work was acquired by the Helsinki Design Museum for their permanent collection.

Markunpoika's design pieces have captured the attention of publications such as AD, ICON, Damn, Elle Decoration, Harper's Bazaar, Wallpaper, Alto, Financial Times, Vogue, Frame, and various other influential magazines. Additionally, his works have been showcased at renowned art fairs, such as Design Basel/Miami, FOG Design + Art, PAD London and Salon Art + Design and NOMAD.
